Canada is one of the leading countries in the world that every year helps and accepts thousands of displaced people and those in need of protection. Generally these group of people would face persecution in their own country based on their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion, or could be subject to torture, risk to their life, or risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment if removed from Canada and returned to their home country.
Under Refugee and Humanitarian Resettlement Program, Immigration Canada works with United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other organization which helps them select the refugees from abroad for resettlement in Canada. Refugees must meet the refugee definition according to the Act and Regulations and pass medical and security examination.
If they qualify they can be sponsored by individuals or by the groups or organizations.
Sponsors are responsible for providing sufficient settlement assistance (including accommodation, food and clothing) to the refugees for the period stipulated in the sponsorship agreement.
